You bought a cap. It got here, you set it on your banger, and it rattled around like a lid on the wrong jar. Or it fit fine but your dabs still taste scorched and you can’t figure out what you’re doing wrong.
Both of those are the same problem. A carb cap is not one thing. There are several kinds, they do different jobs, and the sizing is unforgiving. This guide sorts out which one belongs on your setup.
What a carb cap actually does
Put a cap over a hot banger and you restrict the airflow. That drops the pressure inside, and lower pressure means your concentrate vaporizes at a lower temperature.
Lower temperature is the whole point. You get the terpenes instead of burning past them, and you finish the oil instead of leaving a puddle baked onto the quartz.
Without a cap, most of that flavor goes up in the room. That’s the trade you’re making every time you skip it.
The three types, and who each one is for
The names get used interchangeably online, which is most of why people buy the wrong thing. Here’s the actual difference.
Standard and directional carb caps
A basic cap just covers the hole. A directional cap adds an angled air channel, so when you rotate it you push the airflow around the inside of the banger and move your oil across the hot quartz instead of letting it sit in one spot.
Directional is the version worth owning. Bubble caps are the common shape: a rounded glass ball with an angled stem that seats into the banger and spins with your fingers.
If you’re running a quartz banger and you only buy one cap, buy a directional one.
Spinner caps
A spinner cap is a directional cap built to do one specific job: create a vortex.
The air channel is angled sharply enough that it spins terp pearls around the bottom of your banger. Those pearls smear the oil across the hot surface as they move, so you get a more even vaporization and far less residue left behind.
Spinner caps only make sense if you’re using terp pearls. Without pearls in the banger, you’ve bought an expensive directional cap. With them, it’s a real upgrade, and it’s the setup most flavor chasers land on eventually.
The Fit Check Nobody Does First Before you buy anything, measure your banger’s inner diameter. Most are 20mm or 25mm, and they are not interchangeable. A 25mm cap sitting on a 20mm banger will not seal, and a cap that doesn’t seal does nothing at all. Thirty seconds with a ruler saves you a return.
Joystick caps
Joystick caps are a different animal, and they’re Puffco-specific.
Electronic rigs like the Peak Pro don’t have a banger. They have a chamber with a heating element in the base, and the airflow problem is different. A joystick cap sits on top with a lever you tilt and rotate, letting you steer airflow around the chamber and work the oil down toward the heat.
The important part: these are not universal. A Peak Pro joystick cap does not fit a Peak, a Proxy, or a Pivot. There are separate versions, and the 3DXL chamber has its own fitment again. Check which device and which chamber you have before you order.
Sizing is where most people get it wrong
We see this constantly. Someone buys a beautiful cap from a glass artist, it arrives, and it doesn’t seat.
For bangers, the number that matters is inner diameter. 20mm and 25mm are the two you’ll run into most. Measure across the inside of the bucket, not the outside of the glass.
For Puffco caps, the number is your device and chamber generation. Peak, Peak Pro, Peak Pro with the 3DXL chamber, Proxy, and Pivot all take different caps. Product listings say which, and it’s worth reading that line twice.
Slurper caps are their own category again. Terp slurpers have a completely different geometry, and a standard bubble cap will not work on one.
What you should actually spend
A functional directional cap starts around $22. At that price you get a cap that seals, spins, and does the job correctly.

A $112 Soup Glass encased opal cap does not vaporize your dab better than a $22 cap. It looks considerably better doing it. That’s a real reason to buy one, and we’d rather say that plainly than pretend there’s a performance story.
Collector’s Reality Heady glass caps hold value in a way most accessories don’t. Artist pieces from names like Bradley Miller, Gates Glass, and Devon Allen trade actively, and limited runs sell out and don’t come back. If you’re buying at the high end, you’re partly buying a collectible. Whether that’s worth it depends on whether you’d be annoyed if it chipped.
The Puffco-specific options
Puffco owners have a few things nobody else does.
The Oculus is Puffco’s own glass carb cap for the Peak Pro, and it’s the safe default if you want something that just works.
