What Are Terp Pearls and How Do You Use Them?

terp pearls

You’ve seen them in the bottom of someone’s banger, spinning like they’re in a washing machine. Maybe you’ve asked what they were and gotten a shrug and “they help with flavor.” That’s true, but it skips the part you actually want to know.

Terp pearls are small heat-resistant balls, usually 3mm to 8mm, that you drop into a banger or a Puffco chamber. When you dab, airflow from your carb cap spins them, and they push the oil around the hot surface instead of letting it sit in one puddle. The result is more even vaporization at a lower temperature, which means better flavor and less wasted concentrate.

This post covers how they work, which material to pick, what size fits what, and the two mistakes that turn a $20 set of pearls into a cracked banger.

Why Terp Pearls Actually Work

why terp pearls work

A banger heats unevenly. The bottom where your torch hit is hottest, the walls are cooler, and a dab left alone pools in the hot spot and burns off fast. You either take it too hot to catch everything or too cool and leave a puddle behind.

Pearls fix the puddle problem. As they spin, they drag the oil up the walls and back down, spreading it across more surface area. More surface area means you can run 50 to 100 degrees cooler and still vaporize the full dab. Lower temp is where the flavor lives, and it’s also where you stop scorching your quartz.

There’s a second benefit people underrate. Pearls hold heat. After the banger starts cooling, the pearls keep the oil moving and warm for a few extra seconds, so the tail end of the dab isn’t a chazzed smear you have to Q-tip out.

The carb cap does half the work

Pearls don’t spin on their own. They need directional airflow, which means a spinner cap or a directional cap, not a flat bubble cap. If your pearls just sit there wobbling, the cap is usually the issue. Zee Vapor’s earlier post on carb cap vs spinner cap vs joystick cap breaks down which one you need.

Quartz vs Ruby vs Sapphire vs Opal

The material matters more than the brand. Here’s the honest breakdown.

Quartz is the default and the cheapest. It heats fast, cools fast, and matches the banger, so it doesn’t change how the dab behaves much. Downsides: it chazzes (clouds up) over time, and it’s the most likely to crack if you drop a cold pearl into a hot banger. A 10-pack of 3mm quartz runs about $15.

Ruby and sapphire are the same material, aluminum oxide, in different colors. They hold heat noticeably longer than quartz, which is what you want for low temp dabs. They also don’t chazz. You clean them with iso and they look new. They cost more per pearl but last for years. Most people who dab daily end up here.

Opal pearls are the pretty ones. Synthetic opal flashes color under heat and light, and they’re what people buy when they want the rig to look good. They work fine, but they’re more delicate than ruby and don’t like fast temperature swings. Treat them as a low temp only pearl.

SiC (silicon carbide) pearls exist and hold heat the longest of anything, but they’re dark, they hide the oil, and they’re overkill for most setups. Skip unless you know why you want them.

From Behind the Counter 💎 The most common question we get is “ruby or sapphire?” and the answer is that it doesn’t matter. Same hardness, same heat retention, same price. Pick the color you like. The choice that actually changes your dab is ruby or sapphire versus quartz, and if you dab more than a couple times a week, spend the extra ten dollars.

What Size Terp Pearls Do You Need?

Size depends on your banger or chamber, and getting it wrong is the fastest way to a bad experience.

For a standard 25mm banger, 6mm pearls are the sweet spot. Two of them spin cleanly without crowding. Go down to 4mm or 5mm for a 20mm banger, and 3mm for a mini or a slurper’s dish.

Puffco chambers are their own world. Standard 4mm to 6mm pearls are too big and heavy for the Peak Pro chamber and will scratch the ceramic. Use 3mm pearls in a Peak Pro, and only two or three of them. The Pivot has a smaller chamber still, and a 2mm to 3mm pearl is the ceiling.

There’s also a Puffco-specific alternative worth knowing about. Quartz flakes (sometimes called quartz fans) are flat discs cut to the exact chamber diameter: 14mm for the Peak Pro, 12mm for the Peak, 11mm for the Proxy, 7.5mm for the Pivot. Instead of spinning like a ball, they sit on the bottom and spread the oil across the whole floor of the chamber. A lot of Puffco owners prefer them because there’s nothing to chase around and the ceramic stays untouched.

Quick size reference

  • 25mm banger: two 6mm pearls
  • 20mm banger: two 4mm or 5mm pearls
  • Slurper or blender: one or two 3mm pearls in the dish, plus a pillar if the design calls for it
  • Puffco Peak Pro chamber: two or three 3mm pearls, or a 13mm to 14mm quartz flake
  • Puffco Proxy: 3mm pearls or an 11mm flake
  • Puffco Pivot: 2mm to 3mm pearls or a 7.5mm flake

How to Use Terp Pearls Without Cracking Anything

Here’s the sequence that works.

Drop the pearls into the banger before you heat it. Cold pearls into a hot banger is how quartz cracks and how ruby pearls crack your banger. Heat everything together, let it cool to your target temp, load the dab, cap it, and let the airflow spin the pearls.

After the dab, wait. Don’t Q-tip the pearls out while they’re glowing, and don’t drop them into iso while hot. Let the banger cool, then swab. Ruby and sapphire come clean with a quick iso soak. Quartz needs more scrubbing and will eventually cloud regardless.

For Puffco chambers, add pearls to a cold chamber, run your normal session, and let the chamber cool fully before you tip them out. If a pearl won’t budge, it’s stuck in cooled oil. Warm the chamber briefly and try again rather than prying.

Plain Truth 🧊 Terp pearls will not save a bad dab. If your concentrate is old, your banger is chazzed, or your cap doesn’t seal, pearls make it slightly less bad and that’s it. They’re the last upgrade in a setup, not the first. Fix the cap and the quartz before you spend on pearls.

Where to Buy Terp Pearls That Won’t Disappoint

Cheap pearls from a gas station or a marketplace listing are a gamble. Quartz that isn’t fully fused has air pockets, and air pockets pop under heat. Ruby that’s actually dyed glass will fade and cloud in a week.

Zee Vapor has spent years building one of the deeper terp pearl selections in the country, and the shelf reflects what actually sells to repeat customers: Ruby Pearl Co sets, Bear Quartz value jars, MJ Arsenal opals, Iridescent Glass sapphire packs that come with a storage jar, and Black Market Glass quartz flakes cut for every Puffco chamber. The terp pearls collection is organized by size and material, so you can filter to what fits your banger instead of scrolling.

If you run a Pivot, the 7.5mm Black Market Glass quartz flake for the Puffco Pivot is the piece we point people to first, because standard pearls simply don’t fit that chamber well.

Let It Spin

Two pearls and a directional cap will do more for your flavor than a new rig. Pick ruby or sapphire if you dab often, quartz if you’re testing the water, and a flake if you’re on a Puffco and tired of chasing balls around a ceramic bowl. Heat everything together, let it cool together, and you’ll never crack one. Browse Zee Vapor’s terp pearls by size and material, or contact the shop if you’re not sure what fits your setup.

FAQs

What are the best terp pearls for a Puffco Peak Pro?

Two or three 3mm ruby or sapphire pearls, or a 13mm to 14mm quartz flake. Anything larger than 3mm is too heavy for the ceramic chamber and will scratch it over time. The flake is the lower maintenance choice because it sits flat and doesn’t need airflow to work.

How many terp pearls should you use at once?

Two is the standard for a 25mm banger, and adding more usually makes things worse. Extra pearls crowd each other, stop spinning cleanly, and pull heat out of the quartz faster than it can recover. If two 6mm pearls aren’t moving the oil enough, the fix is a better directional cap, not a third pearl.
